Birth of a SuperShow
The inaugural 2010 Motorhome Caravan & Outdoor SuperShow is already shaping up to be the biggest and best of its kind. But how did it start and who are the organisers?
Never before has there been such an event at the ASB Showgrounds – New Zealand’s largest and premier expo site – and industry response has been phenomenal.
Which is great news for exhibitors and organisers alike. But few are surprised. After all, the industry has undergone steady growth during the past 20 years. Perhaps it’s because more people are choosing motorhomes and caravans over baches. Maybe it’s because of the huge improvements in comfort and design of new models. Or it could just be the simple fact an increasing number of people absolutely love the freedom that this type of holidaying lifestyle offers. There’s no doubt that the trend continues upwards – here and worldwide.
In New Zealand, membership to the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) has leapt from 1,700 to 39,000 in less than 20 years – a figure which represents approximately 80 per cent of motorhome owners.
And with Auckland being the largest population centre of the country, it makes sense there should be an expo catering for this expanding market.
The pair responsible for getting the new show off the ground is David Culpan and Brent Gillies from Spot On Exhibitions. Their close ties with the industry emanates from their involvement with The Motor Caravanner (the NZMCA’s hugely popular magazine). Through their publishing contacts, they have gained considerable insight into the market.
David says: “The SuperShow fulfils both the publics’ and the industry’s needs. It’s a unique opportunity for manufacturers, distributors and dealers to showcase their products in front of thousands.”
